Recognition Before Recall

You run into someone you have not seen in years, someone you never made an effort to remember, and before you can place them, something in you says: I know this person. You cannot retrieve their name, where you met, or anything about them. But the familiarity is immediate and certain, arriving ahead of any detail. You are recognizing them without being able to recall them, and the two are clearly not the same act.
